About the Script

Baybayin is a pre-colonial Philippine script used primarily for writing Tagalog and other Philippine languages before Spanish colonization in the 16th century.

What is Baybayin?

Baybayin (ᜊᜌ᜔ᜊᜌᜒᜈ᜔) is an abugida — each character represents a syllable with the inherent vowel "a". Diacritical marks called kudlit modify the vowel sound.

The script has 3 vowel characters and 15 consonant-syllable characters, each representing the consonant with the inherent "a" (ba, ka, da, etc.).

Kudlit marks placed above change the vowel to e/i, while marks below change it to o/u. A special virama mark cancels the vowel entirely.
